Yendi, Oct.2, GNA - The Yendi Police have arrested a farmer for allegedly murdering a 48- year old woman, Madam Nimong Gyabila of suspecting her of being a witch. Cheshem Jagri, who hailed from Tambado in the Yendi District suspected the deceased for being behind the death of his younger brother, one Gyakumi.

Briefing the GNA on the incident, the Yendi Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Angwubutoge Awuni said on September 15, 2005, the suspect went to the deceased house and accused her of being responsible for the death of his brother through witchcraft. Jagri warned the woman to leave the village to Ngani where there is a witch camp for her own safety but she ignored the threat and on September 23, the suspect went to the deceased in an angry mood and hit her repeatedly on the head with a cudgel.

The deceased fell on the ground and was rushed to the Yendi Government Hospital where the hospital authorities declared her dead. The Divisional Commander said when the news got to the suspect he escaped from the village but some sympathizers of the deceased made a report to the Police.

He said the Police threatened relatives of the deceased that they would not handover her body to them if they failed to produce the suspect. He said the threat made the Unit Committee Members of Tambado and Maamono as well as the younger brother of the suspect, Simon Balabra to arrest the suspect and handed him to the Police.

The suspect has since been placed in Police cells and would soon be put before the Yendi Circuit Court for prosecution.
