Kumasi, July 19, GNA - A septuagenarian mother who aided her 30-year-old daughter to steal, has been fined GH(600 (six million cedis) by a Kumasi Circuit Court.
Yaa Badu will go to prison for two years if she fails to pay the fine.
Her daughter, Yaa Tweneboah, has been jailed five years in hard labour for stealing cash and items valued at more than GH(10,000 (100 million cedis) belonging to Nana Akua Prempeh, a Kumasi-based trader. Adwoa Nyamekye, a third suspect, who pleaded not guilty, was remanded in custody to reappear in court on July 27. Giving details to the court presided over by Mr R.M. Kugyapwah, Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei said the complainant engaged the services of Tweneboah as a house-help and they lived together in her Kwadaso residence in Kumasi.
She said due to Tweneboah's lax attitude to work, the complainant took on Adwoa Nyamekye as an additional domestic-assistant to Tweneboah. Chief Inspector Baffour-Kyei said on July 6 this year, the complainant detected the loss of 300 dollars from her wardrobe and confronted Tweneboah whom she had earlier asked to tidy up her wardrobe. The court heard that Tweneboah initially denied taking the money, but later admitted taking only 200 dollars.
This heightened the suspicion of the complainant who had earlier lost various amounts of money in different currencies in addition to wax prints, jewelleries and cooking utensils, Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei said.
The woman therefore lodged a report to the police for the arrest of Tweneboah, who later led the police to her 70-year-old mother as the one who kept the items for her.
The police retrieved some of the items that got missing earlier.
