This land issue at that Millennium's City has been brewing for more than 30 years. It didn’t start from Akuffo-Addo time. Kofi Asmah or Asnah who is the selling the lands that he claimed were sold to him by the Gomoa Afransie chiefs is not even a member of the NPP as far as I know. I hope Ghanaweb will shelve those propaganda reporting and publish the entire bedrock of firestorm that has engulfed the entire Century 21 Project and how Asmah allegedly twisted the hands of the traditional rulers in the Afransie and the entire Gomoa traditional areas about 30 years ago to willfully lay claim for these lands, including the vast land properties around Kasoa, Gomoa Buduram and the rest. It’s one of the most complicated land ownership cases I have ever heard of. The guy dwelled on the lack of exposure on the part of those old and frayed traditional rulers who never perceived the enormity of the value of the then untapped resources in terms of the lands they were sitting on. He must’ve played a very fast game in acquiring those hundreds of thousands of acres of lands but he played within the confines of rules and the numerous loop holes in the Ghanaian land property laws in the constitution. However I believe this case should set a precedent for the government of Ghana to set up a whole committee of enquiry to address that matter between Asmah and his partners on one part, as against the the people of Gomoa on the other part. Otherwise there will never peace at those Kasoa areas for the generations to come!

Part of the problem lies with the judiciary. The unnecessary and unjustified duration it takes to adjudicate land disputes has given rise to people taking matters into their own hands. The average time to adjudicate land disputes is somewhere between 4-10 years in courts. Who has the patience to wait all this while? I know of someone who has two different land cases in court, one of them has traveled all the way to the SC and is back to the high court to obtain a writ of possession. This is going to take another couple of months. Thereafter, she has to find money to settle the police for the execution. The courts should not tolerate unjustified adjournments, encourage written submissions and ensure swift disposition of cases at least within six weeks. Justice delayed is justice denied. Boost the trust and confidence of the citizenry and institute measures to make sale and transfer of property to be routed through the Lands Commission only. It should no longer be possible to purchase a land directly from the owner. All must pass through the Lands Commissioner who will do the due diligence.
