The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven people in connection with a highway robbery involving a Member of the Council of State.
The suspects are Rashid Yusif, Aaron Abana Baswiefanga, Wilson Avasong, Muntaru Iddrisu alias Virgin, Aminu Zebrilla alias Birdman, Inusah Sumaila alias Agenda, and Haruna Safiano.
A police brief signed by Commissioner of Police (COP) Ms Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director‑General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said the robbery occurred on July 21, 2025, when the victim was travelling on the Tamale–Buipe Highway.
Six armed men reportedly attacked and robbed him of mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, a laptop and other personal belongings.
According to the brief, intelligence gathered by the CID led to an operation by the Anti‑Armed Robbery Unit in Salaga, Savannah Region, on January 11, 2026.
During the operation, Rashid Yusif was arrested and found in possession of an iPhone 7 Plus belonging to one of the victims, which was retrieved.
Investigations also led police to a mobile phone shop at Dagomba Line in Salaga, where shop attendant Aaron Abana Baswiefanga was arrested.
He disclosed that the phone had been brought to the shop by his uncle, Wilson Avasong, an environmental officer and owner of the shop based in Tamale.
COP Donkor said Avasong was subsequently arrested and told investigators he bought the phone from a repairer, Muntaru Iddrisu, also known as Virgin, for GH¢1,000.
Iddrisu was later arrested at the Tamale Aboabo Market and led police to Aminu Zebrilla, alias Birdman, a 35‑year‑old okada rider at Dungu.
Zebrilla admitted to selling the phone to Iddrisu for GH¢650.
A search of Zebrilla’s room uncovered a locally manufactured short gun, a pistol, four live BB cartridges, a sword inscribed “Birdman,” one live 5.56×44 CZ round, two live revolver rounds, a face mask, a jack knife, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, a talisman, a cutter, a catapult, 15 assorted mobile phones, a jungle motorbike, 17 wristwatches, five pen drives, a Telecel SIM card and three MTN SIM cards.
Investigations revealed that Zebrilla is an ex‑convict who was jailed for robbery in 2012. Two additional suspects, Inusah Sumaila, 42, and Haruna Safiano, 32, were later arrested at their hideouts behind the Tamale China Mall.
COP Donkor said investigations are ongoing to arrest other suspects believed to be at large and to recover a weapon still in their possession.
