A disturbing incident in the Juaboso District has left a 9-year-old girl hospitalised after her mother allegedly inflicted severe punishment that has shocked the community.

The young girl is currently receiving treatment at the Kofikrom SDA Hospital after reportedly having her toe cut off.

Police have arrested her mother, 31-year-old Vivian Anto of Sefwi Proso, who is assisting with investigations.

According to a police situational report, the incident was reported on April 3, 2026, by a relative, Stephen Anto.

He alleged that earlier that morning, the suspect used a pair of scissors to sever the right index toe of her daughter, identified as Diana Boakye, as punishment for returning home late.

According to a report on myjoyonline.com, the child was rushed to the hospital, where she remains on admission and is said to be responding to treatment.

When officers visited the facility, they observed the girl with a fresh bandage on her right foot. Initial examination confirmed that her right index toe had been cut off with a sharp object.

During questioning, the victim reportedly identified her mother as the one responsible for the act.

Police say the severed toe has been retrieved and preserved as evidence, while a medical report has also been issued to support further investigations.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned after the Easter break when court sittings resume.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, as the case continues to draw concern over child welfare and protection.
