Police arrest gang leader, one other over Berekum Chelsea bus attack

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects in connection with the attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road on the night of April 12, 2026.

In a statement issued on April 15, 2026, police said the gang leader behind the armed robbery and one other suspect were arrested at their hideout.

The suspects are believed to have carried out the attack on a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20, which was transporting about 30 football players and officials from Samreboi to Berekum.

According to the police, one of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with intelligence officers and has since been taken to the hospital for medical attention.

“The Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident that led to the death of Berekum Chelsea footballer,” the statement read.

The attack resulted in the death of footballer Dominic Frimpong, who suffered gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, but unfortunately, passed away while receiving treatment.

Another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was also robbed of GH¢4,500.00 during the incident.

Police further revealed that two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to aid ongoing investigations.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that further details will be communicated as investigations progress, and has urged citizens to remain calm and continue to have confidence in the force.
