Police arrest four suspected armed robbers in Bolgatanga

The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspected armed robbers following a targeted intelligence-led operation in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

The suspects Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana (also known as Saaga), and Adu Yakubu were arrested on May 5, 2026.

In a statement issued by the police, it said the operation forms part of

ongoing efforts to clamp down on violent crime in the region.

“This arrest is the result of sustained intelligence work aimed at dismantling armed robbery syndicates operating across the Upper East and North East Regions,” it said.

According to the police, investigations revealed that the suspects had converged at Gbane, a mining community in the Talensi District, on May 4, 2026.

They reportedly travelled from Yagaba and Fumbisi to execute a planned robbery operation.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted to a series of robberies across multiple locations, including the Talensi District, the Yagaba–Fumbisi road, and the Yagaba–Nanguruma road in the North East Region.

"They also confessed to a robbery at the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga on 22nd March 2025, which was captured in a viral video in which they were seen wielding an AK47 assault rifle", the statement noted.

The police further disclosed that suspects admitted to multiple robberies at Gbane mining sites, where gold and cash were allegedly stolen.

"They further admitted to multiple robberies at Gbane mining sites, where gold and large sums of money were taken from victims", the statement said.

Following their confessions, the suspects led police to a farm near Biung, close to Gbane, where the gang leader, Amadu Rahman, had allegedly hidden an AK-47 rifle.

A search at the location led to the recovery of the weapon, bearing serial number 68100563, along with 87 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a fertilizer sack.

The police said, "During the search to retrieve the weapon, suspect Amadu Rahman collapsed and was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy".

The remaining three suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court.

The police has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that efforts are being intensified to dismantle wider criminal networks operating in the region.

“We remain committed to ensuring that all persons involved in these violent crimes are brought to justice,” it added.
