The two nurses have been remanded
The Tamale Circuit Court has ordered two nurses to be remanded in police custody for one week following their arrest over the stolen baby at Salaga Government Hospital in the Savannah Region.
According to a report by 3news.com, the two midwives were arrested and arraigned before court on June 11, 2026.

The incident is reported to have happened in the early hours of June 10, 2026, and has sparked outrage from the baby’s family, who are demanding clarity on what happened and insisting that the suspects remain in custody until the child is located.
The Salaga District Police Commander, DSP Gabriel Alorsey, confirmed the arrest in an interview with TV3, stating that the two suspects, a male and a female midwife, have given contradictory statements about the disappearance of the newborn baby.
“We have arrested two midwives. One male and one female. We are keeping them because they are giving conflicting accounts. They are suspects. We will take them to court,” he said.
Meanwhile, a relative of the baby’s father, Balik Majik Ebenezer, recounted that the mother, Priscilla, was admitted to the hospital around 3:00 am while in labour and successfully delivered a baby girl between 8:00 am and 9:00 am.
He said the family was initially informed that both mother and child were in stable condition after delivery.
However, they grew concerned when they were repeatedly denied access to see the newborn.
“According to the husband, they said the woman delivered successfully, and it was a baby girl. But on several attempts to go and have a look at the baby, the nurses did not allow them,” he said.
Ebenezer added that confusion deepened when the mother was later moved to the ward without the baby, prompting the family to search for answers about the child’s whereabouts.
“When they brought the lady to the ward, the child was not there. The family became worried and asked her to go back to the maternity ward to check on the baby. When she went there, the child was nowhere to be found,” he recounted.
He further explained that when the family confronted a nurse, they were told it was assumed the mother had taken the baby out for breastfeeding. However, after checking, the nurse also confirmed that the newborn was missing.

“The nurse said she thought the mother had come out with the child to breastfeed, so she was not aware that the baby was missing. She later checked and also confirmed that the child was not there,” he said.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Salaga Police, leading to the arrest of the two midwives who were on duty at the time, as investigations continue.
