Four GRA officers interdicted over alleged transit cargo diversion

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has interdicted four officers over their alleged involvement in an attempted diversion of transit cargo into the local market, following investigations into a suspected customs fraud scheme that could have deprived the state of significant revenue.

Addressing the media on July 7, 2026, Commissioner-General Anthony Sarpong said the officers, who worked on the consignment, have been removed from duty and are currently undergoing the Authority's internal disciplinary process.

"We have interdicted four officers who worked on the consignment, and we are going through our internal disciplinary processes to ensure that all officers found culpable are dealt with in accordance with our internal policies and the law," he said.

Sarpong disclosed that, on the directive of the Ministry of Finance, the seized consignment has been allocated to the National School Feeding Programme.

He reiterated the GRA's commitment to strengthening customs enforcement, assuring the trading community and the general public that the Customs Division has intensified compliance measures, particularly at Ghana's borders, to enhance revenue mobilisation and prevent illicit trade.

The Authority says investigations are ongoing and has pledged to ensure that any officer found culpable will be sanctioned in accordance with its regulations and the laws of Ghana.

The disciplinary action follows investigations into the interception of 18 trucks in February 2026.

The trucks had been declared as transit cargo from Togo through the Akanu border to Niger but were allegedly diverted into the Ghanaian market instead of continuing to their declared destination.

According to the GRA, the suspected diversion could have resulted in substantial losses in import duties and taxes if the goods had entered the local market without the appropriate customs procedures.
