39 rescued as EOCO uncovers alleged overseas travel fraud scheme in Hohoe

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has rescued 39 persons during an intelligence-led operation targeting an alleged travel fraud and human trafficking scheme in Hohoe in the Volta Region.

The news of the arrests was contained in a statement issued by the EOCO on July 22, 2026.

According to EOCO, the operation targeted two groups involved in the travel fraud and human trafficking scheme.

"The operation targeted two groups operating under the names "Model Q" and "Ignite", which are suspected of luring unsuspecting individuals with false promises of overseas travel opportunities", it stated.

It further noted that 14 of the persons picked up during the operation are suspected to be connected with the scheme, while 25 others are believed to be victims and the suspected victims are said to have originated from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire.

"Initial assessments suggests that fourteen (14) out of the persons picked up are suspected to be connected to the scheme, while twenty-five (25) are believed to be victims originating from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, and Côte d'Ivoire", the statement indicated.

EOCO said several items, including mobile phones, travel documents, and identification cards were recovered during the operation.

It reiterated its commitment to combating human trafficking, travel fraud, and organised crime, and urged the public to be cautious of suspicious recruitment and travel arrangements.
