Wa court jails man 10 years for defiling seven-year-old boy

The Upper West Regional Police Command has secured the conviction and sentencing of a 42-year-old man, Elyasu Kunateh, to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a seven-year-old boy in Wa.

According to a statement issued by the Command on July 23, 2026, the convict was arrested on January 20, 2026, after the victim's mother reported that the incident had occurred on January 17, 2026.

Police said they immediately launched investigations after receiving the complaint and ensured that the victim received medical attention and psychosocial support.

"Upon receiving the complaint, the Police immediately commenced investigations and referred the victim to a medical facility for examination, in addition to offering him psychosocial support," the statement said.

The accused was subsequently arraigned before the Wa High Court, where he was remanded into police custody pending the determination of the case.

Following a full trial on Thursday, July 23, 2026, the Wa High Court, presided over by His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi, found Kunateh guilty of the offence and sentenced him to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

The Upper West Regional Police Command said the conviction demonstrates its resolve to protect vulnerable persons and ensure perpetrators of child abuse are brought to justice.

"The Upper West Regional Police Command assures the public that it remains committed to protecting vulnerable persons and will continue to pursue all reported cases of child abuse, sexual and gender-based violence," the statement noted.

The Command further appealed to parents, guardians, caregivers and the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of abuse without delay.

"The Command further encourages parents, guardians, caregivers, and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police facility for immediate action," the statement added.
