Police arrest gang behind GH¢430,000 Buipe MoMo robbery

The Savannah Regional Police Command, with the support from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, has dismantled a robbery gang allegedly behind the theft of GH¢430,000 from two Mobile Money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market on June 29, 2026.

The development follows the deployment of a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to assist the Savannah Regional Command with investigations into the robbery.

In a statement dated Friday, August 21, 2026, the Police said preliminary investigations established that four men, armed with two pump-action guns, a single-barrel gun and an AK-47 assault rifle, attacked the vendors and fired sporadically before escaping with the money.

On July 23, sustained surveillance by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Police Intelligence Directorate, with support from the Kintampo Divisional Police Command, led to the arrest of 28-year-old suspect Yacouba Oumar at Soronuase in the Bono East Region.

According to the Police, Oumar admitted participating in the robbery during interrogation and identified his alleged accomplices as Yakubu Seidu alias Baba, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya alias Addo and Abduli Buipe alias Addo.

He further disclosed that the group was allegedly contracted by a cattle trader at the Buipe market identified as Alhaji Yacouba, also known as Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, to carry out the robbery.

Two remanded over alleged GH¢932,040 fuel theft, arson

The Police said investigations subsequently led officers to Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa, where other members of the alleged syndicate were believed to be hiding.

“An exchange of fire between the police and the suspects resulted in the death of suspects Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu,” the Police stated.

The bodies of the three suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The Police also retrieved one pump-action gun and five live BB cartridges, as well as a single-barrel gun believed to have been used during the robbery.

Meanwhile, Yacouba Oumar remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations.

The Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest Alhaji Yacouba and other persons connected to the robbery.

“The Police remain committed to bringing all persons connected to this robbery to face justice,” the statement added.
