Driver jailed 15 years for conspiring to rob former employer

The Circuit Court 2 in Accra has sentenced 28-year-old driver Thomas Agambaa, alias Rasta, to 15 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of conspiring with accomplices to rob his former employer at gunpoint.

According to a report by crimechecknewsgh.com on August 23, 2026, Agambaa was convicted on two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

He pleaded guilty with explanation, but the court held that his account did not constitute a defence and could only be considered in mitigation.

According to the prosecution, led by DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, Agambaa and his accomplices attacked Grace Belkis Azure at her residence in Zaare, Bolgatanga, on June 12, 2022.

The gang, armed with pump-action guns and pistols, reportedly subjected Azure and a witness, identified as Desmond, to beatings before fleeing with an unspecified amount of money.

Investigators further established that Agambaa acted together with Banabas Akologo Abilba, alias Akoli, Basit, Justice, Thomas, alias Tommy Lee, Wizzy and Mohammed, alias Shatta. Akoli and Wizzy are deceased, while Mohammed remains at large.

Police intelligence linked Agambaa to an organised robbery syndicate operating in Bolgatanga.

He was arrested on August 4, 2026, at his hideout in Ganbibko, where officers recovered an unregistered Haojue motorbike.

During interrogation, Agambaa reportedly admitted his involvement and named his accomplices.

Further investigations revealed that Agambaa had previously worked as an ambulance driver with Patasgo Company Limited and also served as an errand boy for Madam Azure.

His role allegedly gave him access to information about her business operations, finances and daily routines.

The prosecution said dissatisfaction over unfulfilled promises, including assistance with housing and obtaining a driver’s licence, allegedly contributed to his decision to participate in the robbery plot.

The court heard that Agambaa had cultivated close ties with some of Azure’s workers, including Justice, who remains at large. Together, they allegedly conspired on multiple occasions to rob her.

Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects, recover the firearms allegedly used in the robbery and dismantle the criminal network.
