Police arrest 36 suspects over mob killing of fellow officer

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the death of a police officer who was attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.

The deceased, General Constable Redeemer Owusu, was part of a team of officers conducting highway patrol duties along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road on September 16, 2026.

According to a Police statement dated September 17, 2026, the officers noticed a motorbike rider who suddenly diverted into the bush after seeing the police vehicle.

The officers became suspicious and followed the rider from a different direction, where they found him unconscious on a bush road.

The officers picked up the man and were transporting him to a hospital when he died on the way.

“Following news of the rider’s death, a mob from the community allegedly attacked the police officers, resulting in the death of General Constable Owusu. Other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries, while the Police vehicle was also damaged in the attack,” the statement said.

The bodies of both the deceased officer and the motorbike rider have since been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The Inspector-General of Police has deployed investigators and intelligence officers to assist with the ongoing probe and identify those responsible for the attack.

Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, Kalba and the Regional Intelligence Team are also on the ground to strengthen security and maintain law and order in the area.

The 36 suspects arrested in connection with the incident are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be put before the court.

The Police Command has condemned the attack and said it will ensure that those found responsible face the full rigours of the law.
