Cheikh Touré: Police uncover how Ivorian goalkeeper was lured to Ghana and left dead

The Ghana Police Service has revealed new details about the events surrounding the death of Senegalese goalkeeper Cheikh Touré, more than 11 months after his body was abandoned in Kumasi.

According to the police, Touré was brought to the Manhyia Hospital on October 16, 2025, by persons who claimed to be his brothers. He had suffered several abdominal injuries, but those accompanying him reportedly told hospital authorities that he had been involved in an accident.

The goalkeeper was, however, pronounced dead on arrival.

The same individuals subsequently took his body to the Ebenezer Mortuary at Tafo in Kumasi, where they deposited it before fleeing, according to the latest police account.

Investigations later pointed to a suspected four-member group allegedly operating as football scouts. Police say the group used online platforms and networking to lure unsuspecting players to Ghana with promises of football opportunities.

Two suspects arrested in connection with the case, 32-year-old Nigerien Salifu Walid and 24-year-old Burkinabè Aziz Wadrago Mane, were picked up at a hideout in Banpanase, near Mamponteng, on September 20, 2026.

The arrests followed a sustained intelligence-led operation involving the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Police Intelligence Directorate in the Ashanti Region.

Police say the two suspects admitted during interrogation to their involvement and disclosed their respective roles in luring Touré to Ghana as part of an alleged scheme to defraud him.

Two other alleged members of the group, Noukoubri Arzouma Sylvian, alias Prince Pierre, and another suspect identified only as Barry, remain at large.

Police say efforts are underway to arrest them.
