Ghana@50: Greater Cincinnati

On March 6, 2007, Ghana will be 50 years since it became the first country south of the Sahara Desert to gain independence from the British in 1957. As a result, persons of Ghanaian descent throughout the world, including us in the Greater Cincinnati and Tri-State, area (Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana) are celebrating this memorable day in Ghana’s history.

The Ghanaian Association of Greater Cincinnati (GAGC), Cincinnati, Ohio have scheduled two events for the celebration of the GOLDEN JUBILEE OF GHANA’S INDEPENDENCE DAY. The Chairperson of the Planning committee for this celebration is Dr. John Polley. The President of the Ghanaian Association is Mr. Kofi Nevis. Dr. Cyril Daddieh is a member of the leadership team.

There will be a non-denominational Ghanaian Church service on Saturday, March 3, 2007, at New Life Outreach Church, 1391 Crescentville Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45246 to usher in the Golden Jubilee. This event is a thanksgiving service and is open to the general public. The service will bring together all the Ghanaian churches in the Greater Cincinnati area and all friends of Ghana. A combined Choir from the Ghanaian churches will lead the Praises and Worship part of the service. The Gospel music promises to lift up the congregation to dance to the blessings and glory of God.

The second celebration is on Saturday, March 10, 2007 at the Kolping Center, 10235 Mill Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45240. Highlights of the event will be a Banquet, Cultural show and Dance. The Cultural show will consist of a play by the youth “Cry for Freedom”, traditional drumming and dancing and a Fashion show. It is led by Dr. Bernard Gadagbui and Dr. Fred Wireko. The Guest Speaker at this ceremony will be Mrs. Irene Addo, Deputy Chief of Mission of Ghana to USA. A souvenir journal or brochure including the programs, and advertisements from businesses, churches and families has been prepared. It will definitely be a Collector’s Item. A slide presentation on Ghana, Pre and Post Independence periods has been prepared by Dr. Kwabena Ofori-Attah.

The Ghanaian Association of Greater Cincinnati (GAGC) is made up of immigrants from Ghana living in the greater Cincinnati area and Dayton, Ohio. Besides catering for the welfare of the Ghanaian immigrants here, GAGC exposes the rich cultures of Ghana and business opportunities to the people of the Tri-State area and beyond. There are many persons of Ghanaian descent in the community contributing to different sectors of the economy. We have in the region, several businesses owned and operated by Ghanaians.
