Ghanaians To Be Evacuated From Lebanon?

...Asked To Register At Consulate
Beirut July 19, 2006 - Ghanaian migrant workers in Lebanon, who until this morning, did not know what will become of them in case things get completely out of hand in the hostilities between Lebanon and Israel have now been asked to register at the Ghana Consulate in Beirut for possible evacuation by the British Embassy.

The news was relayed from the Consulate to leaders of the various Ghanaian communities here in Lebanon this afternoon and is fast being circulated around.

Ghanaians have watched as Nigerians and other foreign nationals are being evacuated either to Syria or to other safe places, and have waited anxiously for any kind of assistance or concern from their authorities back home. It seems though that finally some kind of help may be on the way.

Most Ghanaians, like most other foreign workers here in Lebanon, have initially thought these hostilities will be brief like most of its kinds in the past, but unfortunately things seem to be getting out of hand and therefore this call for registration for possible evacuation will be welcomed by many.

The question still remains though as to which type of evacuation the government of Ghana has made with the British Embassy? And are there any financial matters involved? Any emergency evacuation will have to be through a neighboring country such as Cyprus or Syria. Nigerians who were initially taken to Syria by their embassy seem to have been abandoned there.

Another pathetic question and a bigger concern of most Ghanaians is the fate of most of their compatriots who may be in contract with their employers in isolation from the community.
