If you do not live in Ghana, and so are not affected by gov't decisions, why should you be allowed to vote in elections?
Our fellow countrymen living in the country must be the only people to decide who governs them. After all they bear the consequences of their vote.
If constituencies are created for the diaspora, who will stand and represent these constituencies in parliament?
We need to think through such proposals critically before airing them.

I think the President acknowledgement of the Diaspora Support Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration is worthy of note. it is a manifestation of high level acceptance of the need to bring on board the resource capacity of the Ghanaian Diaspora beyond financial remittance. On the substantive issue of a Ministry for the diaspora, I am of the view that though it is a worthy call, there must be a gradual and strong engagement of the Ghanaian community abroad which will aid in the final establishment of such a wonderful global 'first-timer'. This will make room for us to consider the numerous challenges that such a Ministry will be faced with. E.g. how can the interests of Ghanaians within Africa, about 75% of the Ghanaian diaspora be reconciled with those of their colleagues in China, Canada and Papua New Guinea and Ecuador. I however believe with increased engagement the dream will be fulfilled.

The President's responds to the author of this book that, he needs to convince him makes a lot of sense. Because this is not a very important need for us in the diaspora. And even our memebers of the legislature will kick against it. Because it will be a waste of resources and duplication of service since our various foriegn missions abroad are already doing the jobs the so-called ministers of diaspora and parliamentarians will be doing. Our economy is now getting on a good footing. Therefore, we should rather be thinking about how to settle back home for good and raise our kids better, instead of this unnecessary idea.

An area that Ghana needs to look critically at is the area of citizenship where our children born outside of Ghana are not necessarily Ghanaians first despite jus sanguini.
