The very people they are refusing to take of- your mothers and fathers are the once that paid for their medical school education. Today such ungrateful humans would put their tools down not for their salaries but for EXTRAS!! Shame onto them.
The NPP is just fanning this BS just for political gains. Unfortunately, God not being an Alata man, the docs are not getting the results they are looking for. Ghanaians are finding other means to get treatment and the so call doctors are slowly loosing their mojo and relevance. The Ghana government has all the rights to bring in doctors . Western missionaries come to this country without speaking any language. Blood work and other diagnostic test will help the foreign docs to treat our sick. There are many doctors in the USA from the Middle East who can hardly speak English but are doing the job. They government should flood the market with the Cuban doctors. We need them all. After all they will not get up one day and strike leaving our sick helpless and powerless. Shaaaaaaame on the crooks fanning the issue.

No medical student receive any grant nor any allowance not even for a stethoscope from any govt. Kindly tell the importers to visit the cuban docs when they are sick. Do u know the cost of bringing a cuban doc, even for free is not cheap as argued above. Compare what the docs are asking for and the arrangement govt is putting in place and contrast for yourself what will cost the nation. Unless people want to siphon money through this deal or is part of the cyclical cuban brigade but due to docs strike, this does not make sense to even an inexperienced manager.

If you don't love money, why are you in the U.S. Stop this hypocrisy, because this issue, can be solved within a twinkle of an eye. I don't think you've read the article critically.It is the government who is taking the doctors for a ride. We do not respect our own. You and I know that these cubans will not last. Why does the government wants to waste our scarce resources, when we can treat our doctors better to provide the essential service all of us need. How long did it take the government to honor the parliamentarians' request for pay increase?. Remember, there no class differences in Ghana. And also, do not forget: what is good for the goose is good for the gander as well. Oh, the Doctors are not asking for pay increase here; they asking for their arrears. Get your dictionary and read what 'arrearss mean. Who says it is good or people to die?. What happened to the NHIS( the best thing that ever happened to mother Ghana)?. What happened to FREE MATERNAL CARE?. What happened to the SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAM and rhevrest?. The NPP with their able leadership of H.E. John Agyekum Kuffuor, in their God-given wisdom, knew these programs would save lives in Ghana(and surely they did). But what happened to the programs when the NDC took ever the castle?. Everything went abysmal, all in the name of 'the country is broke'. But they had GHC 52m to give to one of their own for no work done. Why can't they use the money they intend to spend on the Cuban Doctors to offset the Ghanaian Doctors' arrears?. Common sense, isn't it?.

President John Mahama, is taking the right decision with the latin counterpart. How much will their accommodation and air-tickets and food and other provision cost( maybe $20million )we have the money. This is quicker way to solve our national medicare isssue, for both the youth and eldercare, while the local phyiscians and nurses are given ample long time to negotiate their allowances and payment/salary increase. This what Sir. J.J. Rawlings taught N.D.C. until now. Since N.P.P. c.p.p. P.P.P may all be part of associaton of salray increase bargain and trade union congress. It is not merry making always to rule third-world country like Ghana, we ought to advance to middle-income class nation by now, but few elites mainly 800,000 educated graduates are part of union always demanding salary increase as habitual thing.

Does a Doctor need to understand somebody's dialect or language before he gives him a medical care as he can see that the person's leg or arm is broken? Or the person is complaining about his stomach or is having a headache?

Bravo President Mahama. Your solution to help the majority of Ghanaians in this situation does not suit NPP, they will lose election in 2016 as that majority will vote you again for having shown attention and solidarity to them.

Are you aware that before Ghanaian doctors' salaries were paid under the SSSS they sat down with govt & other experts to decide, based on the salaries other doctors within the subregion & the world on a whole were receiving only to realise that they would merit about 1.8x what they were earning on the HSS. This same govt pleaded with the doctors to come to a reasonable figure, which was settled at about 1.2x their original HSS figure! Only for your Govt to renege on this barely a year after everything was running smoothly!! Ghanaian doctors are amongst the least family paid in the world! Now with this, if you thnk you've seen Brain Drain before, let me ASSURE you: you haven't seen ANYTHING yet!

I am surprised that our well learned colleagues in the medical profession have allowed their leaders such pro-NPP Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Adusei and Dr Frank to use them in their proxy war against the NDC. These guys are so obsessed with making the country ungovernable as indicated by the NPP leadership that they even care the consequences of their actions on poor Ghanaians. What do they expect the government to do? If you hold your government to ransom because of a shortage of skilled Drs, the natural thing to do is ship them in from where the services of Drs are affordable. The Cuban Drs will rush at the opportunity to work in Ghana. They earn less than 50% of what Ghanaian Doctors earn in their country Cuba so coming to Ghana will be an improvement.
But this is just the short term measure the government is implementing to stop doctors from sabotaging its administration. The long term measure will be regrettable and diffusing the monopoly power doctors are currently enjoying. It is better for the government to ship in doctors from abroad, even if it cost them more, rather than standby and let their kind, Ghanaians doctors, neglect patients. Diseases do not go on strike. As the doctors have boycotted the hospitals, people continue to fall ill. If the doctors are no longer will to renders their services to the government, nothing stops the government from looking elsewhere. The constitution of Ghana allows that. Historically, labout agitations have led to many countries, including in the west, open their barriers to foreign doctors and therefore external competition. The doctors’ action will have far reaching and long lasting consequences on their conditions and terms of employment. The strike action can only be bad for the doctors.
NPP, get used to fact that you have been rejected by the electorate. If an election were to be conducted today, you will still loose, with or without the support of Adusei-Poku and Serebour.
Further measures the government can take to prevent doctors taking Ghanaians for granted.
- Increased the number of people qualifying as doctors. The doctors are simply exploiting the laws of demand and of supplier.
- Strengthen the power and capacities of other health professional to enable them deliver certain types of care if the doctors go on strike again as I think they will so long as they have the monopoly power to deliver health care to Ghanaians.
- Create a pool of locum doctors who can be drafted in on short notice
- Remove the powers of doctors to regulate those who can register and practice medicine in Ghana. It can currently deliberately difficult, as bureaucracy is used by the doctors, to practice in Ghana as an overseas doctor.
- Sack doctors who break labour laws and revoke their certificates, until they refund the full cost of training that was given to them for free.
- Expel those leaders such as Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Adusei and Dr Frank Serebour who are using the GMA and the matters to do with payments to incite labour agitation and fight their political battle on behalf of the NPP and their learned colleague CEO cum presidential candidate failed campaigner Prof. Frimpong-Boateng.

What is your headache? So now you know how to release statements, and when you did it condemns the government; what about the wicked and no-mercy-only important in Ghana Doctors, who cares not if the tax payers whose money helped trained them die?
Shut up and let the sleeping place and air fares of the live-saving Cuban Doctors be the government's headache. Which solutions did you offer during as the strike went on?
The Cuban government can chose to airlift the doctors and possibly pay for their accommodation if they so wish in the name of disaster management which the adamant doctors have created, despite calls from prominent individuals, the clergy and the citizenry whose taxes trained them.
Accommodating 300 Doctors is not a problem; there are a lot of unused buildings that can be temporary converted to house them. The Cuban Doctors are not like the striking Ghanaian doctors. They can even accept to stay with willing families in the country as they know they are in Ghana to save abandoned lives.
On the other hand, most Ghanaian families would be ever ready and willing to accommodate a willing Doctor. How glad would I be to accommodate a Doctor from overseas in my home who is ready to do what a Doctor in my own land has refused to do even though he or she is taken the salary!
These Doctors have lost credibility and respect in the eyes of Ghanaians and some countries abroad that are following their actions on a daily basis.
I don't blame them, they can only practice in Ghana; not even Togo. How would they explain their actions when they are advancing their careers in the USA, UK and the rest as they would have to do several years of residency in those countries and need to answer questions by all means during interviews? What a taint on their CVs!
Whiles their counterparts are busy doing voluntary works elsewhere in the world and researching all in the name of saving lives, they are busy striking to kill lives in the name of arrears. What a shame!
So, NPP-USA, bow your heads in shame with them for helping their striking cause.

The NDC health minister shouldn't forget that; one of the causes of inefficiency in health care delivery is language or communication barrier that may exist between the provider and the receiver (the patient). I hope they are not just looking for doctors, but also the efficiency in delivery. In addition, communication barrier can also lead to inappropriate drug prescription, and this is very serious since it can result in death. A word to the wise is enough.

It is quite unfortunate that we the citizens who try to prove that we understand politics only continue to behave very foolishly. Why should I put my words this way; It is because the definition of politics says that it is the science or art of governing a nation. Yes it is the duty of the govt. in power to see to the mansging of the nation. If we take the stand of negative politics then the issue of doctors refusing to go back to work without receiving all that they wish to have will drag us apart since every person will like his point to be given the greatest attention than others.

By normal stand, there should have been an aggrement if at least every political party including the NPP has called on the doctors to be sensitive to the situation of our own people who are sick; who may be NPP or NDC supporters when it comes to voting.

Generally I see most Ghanaians who comment on national issues to be most times myopic and never in for the progress and the welfare of our nation

My choice would be the cuban doctors have to come in to help solve a situation which involves death. Even at times like this who may think of Cuban doctor not so fluent in English, one needs attention from a doctor, and you the NPP guys in USA can not convince anybody that the Cuban doctors can not express themselves in English at all. What a shameful statement from an angle of village mind. You're talking about doctors and not normal cubans. Do you know that during the Busia administration when Kufour was the deputy foreign minister a similar situation happened with the Seamen? When the seamen were on strike the then PP govt. instead of aggreeing fully with the seamen over their right they were fired by Busia and they brought in new sailors based on nepotism. Finally the old seailors lost their work. Even the case of the workers at GIHOC, where workers were sacked b'cos of their strike, which also caused Amatey Kwei to loose his job as a labour activist.Luckly for our doctors nobody has sacked them but rather govt decides to fly in Cubans who we are already faniliar with to work side by side to help our own patients. If the money is not there to pay them NOW can't they help our loving ones who are sick. Where is the sacrificial love of the doctors for the people whose taxed money was used as subsidy to support our studies?

Why is the NPP body in USA not interested to ask the NPP executives in Ghana to come out clean and ask the doctors to show their love to the public since they are still receiving their basic salaries so that the special package they are waiting for could be given to them by all means. That package is their entitilments.

Hei Nii Okai, I do respect your opinion but you are making it too partisan. Not all these Doctors lean to NPP, NDC ,CPP nor other Political Parties. They are our sons, dauthers, brothers, sisters and otherwise who are asking for their rights to be met.

It is out of sense for the Government to come and say that he could not pay the Doctors outstanding arrears for them whilst the same governemt was able to doled out millions of cedis to the just ended last session of do nothing parliamentarias who some are serving now and those who lost their seats. Also most Ministers and their Deputies have had their end of service bounty emoluments paid to them already and where did the Governament had the money to pay? Remember that if it is going to their pockets, they will have the means to pay but to others, they will hesitate. Just think about the minimum wage increase made about 2 or 3 days ago to GH5.38 or so for a day whilst a member of parliament takes not less than GHC7,000.00 per month excluding his other allowances? Is this not a slap in the face to the low wage earners? Everything been equal, I think the whole governing system stinks and need to be studied carefully and make changes.

We do not know how many Doctors will be flown from Cuba to take charge but considering all the logistics which will go with it, I don't think it is prudent to bring them in. The Governemt should rather sign whatever agreement the Doctors are talking about and let peace prevail for them to return to their post. E&OE.
