Journalists in the west like to highlight slavery. It is a world-wide problem but exploitation shouldn't be mixed up with slavery. These farm hands can leave at any time. They are not sold. They are not property. The capo's can't kill them if they desire. These farm hands are getting money. Slaves don't.

What the Journalist said rightly and aptly reflects what is on the ground in most of the areas mentioned. If you know of an isolated case or area where the conditions are better and the workers could make as much as you mentioned, it does not necessarily invalidate the core message in the report.
Besides, the story goes beyond just what occurs in Italy. It opens the lid off similar situations across the Globe that have received only scanty efforts to redress.
Slave labor exists in the wealthy Arab World as well. It exists also in the wealthy Asian countries, as well as in South America. So, the real import of the Article is to remind the World that failure of Governmental policies at home are partly to blame for forcing people into such inhuman conditions to seek sheer survival.
Surely, if the Government in Ghana could do better, much of such migration into the "Lion's Den" might be prevented. But if the story were not told, no attention would be brought to such cases to induce our Government to reconsider many of its retrogressive policies.
The story also is necessary to forewarn all our folks who would adamantly sell whatever little capital they have at home to make those journeys to Europe and elsewhere only to be enslaved.
The Journalist, I think, presented a balanced picture, telling about those who accept the deplorable conditions as being their own choice, and those who think they deserve better.
But the most important point is that the fact that a poor person begs for help does not mean he or she must be enslaved to receive the needed assistance.
If you would take our Government to task on this, that is okay. But folks could do better themselves by voting the right persons into Parliament and Offices across Africa to see real livable conditions at home that would not force our folks out into voluntary servitude.

I have lived and worked in the UK for the last 43 years and have travelled widely in Europe in view of my job as a Chartered Insurer. Ghanaians have approached me in different countries to help them get out out of situations similar to the ones outlined in this article. Sometimes I advise them to go to the Ghana Consulate but they tell me their passports had been confiscated until they work to pay off the investment their employer had paid to the rogue agent who got them to Europe. Even if their passports were not confiscated they dare not go their consulate for fear of returning home empty handed. So Kwesi, get informed and don't criticise something you have no knowledge of, please.

There have been numerous incidents of Farm owners in the Western USA using coercion to get the workers stay under conditions that are illegal under the Law. The fact that the situation is not as bad in these areas that you mention does not mean they do not exist. Such conditions exist also in the underground Sex Slave Markets that have been written about extensively. And even the USA, for example, is not exempted from that. So, check your facts.

I plucked tomatoes, cut flowers lying on my knees 9 hours a day and had to ride back home. When official full time workers were paid 200 guilders a week I received 50 guilders a week.
Was I a white slave in Europe ?
No I did it as a volunteer to have some pocket money as a kid, I never complained, I loved my first job !
I started working 10 years ago in Ghana and couldn't find an expatriate job so decided to work for 20 Cedis a day.
Real hard working people can find a job in Ghana and make it here, no need to ask for anybodies pity in Europe.

Produce their own tomato farms to be sold to borkina, maly, tunisia, and all those arid places. And still make decent bucks. Tomatoes does not need much soil to grow. It grows on little soil moisture and humors.

In 1991 I was in Italy myself.hmmmmmm somebody sponsor me from Ghana to Ghana just graduated from apam secondary school very young and really don't hv any experience in terms of real life.the connection guy sounded so good to my uncle that he has no choice to refuse to help me go.so long story short I landed in Italy and was dropped at rome train station in the winter cold no jacket and nobody to contact very stranext nded.soon I realized am not alone in that situation so what we did everyday is to sleep in those trains which are not moving or travelling.we did that for 90days with police chasing us everyday and night.Next move is from Rome to Napoli same situation for 60days until finally find a ghetto in castelvolturno.no bathroom no toilet and no job.meanwhile my uncles has already disappointed for helpn me go there bcos am not sending money and looking back to help other family members as he planned.all is bcos the connection guy sounded so sweet and easy to him about Italian living.but to God be the glory I managed patiently for 14yrs to hv my break tru and moved out comfortably from Italy to another country and surviving more peacefully than I was 25yrs ago.connection guys never tell truth so I don't blame us that much in this situations.keep ur head up and pray change will come

The land where women and children do not matter, only "big kings" and other personalities. The land where the education system has produced "professional thieves" who are unable to translate the natural worth into real progress for the masses. It is all tears and blood for the masses while the "big men and Women" enjoy. This explains why young men walk miles on the desert to get to Libya, many die on the road and yet many continue to take that risk. Wake up and make changes to the way we govern ourselves because it is not working, if we continue the same way, we should not expect different results. Get rid of the 'king/queen nonsense to improve our democracy and allow politicians to manage our lands properly.
