Ningo Prampram MP Samuel Nartey George, has said the tribute by Matilda Amissah-Arthur, widow of late former Vice-President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur at his funeral, was a wake-up call to the nation.
Mrs Amissah-Arthur expressed shock over the wonderful tributes given about her deceased husband by some people she claimed vilified and maligned him when he was alive.
In her tribute at the final funeral rites ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, 27 July, Mrs Amissah-Artur said: “Over the last few weeks, I have been amazed at the number of people who have come to show appreciation and I ask myself: ‘Is this Ghana?’ Are all these people in Ghana because of the maligning, the lies, the treachery, the wickedness, the mischievousness?
“I ask myself: Is this Ghana? I ask myself is this my own husband that you have come to say tribute to? And today, I ask the same question: Did people really know my husband? Did they take time to know him? The false accusations, the lies the maligning, did they know him? My dearest, me, your children, we know you.”
Commenting on his Facebook wall, Mr Nartey George, said: “Heartfelt and extremely powerful tribute by Her Excellency former Second Lady, Madam Matilda Amissah-Arthur.
“Delivered extempore with so much passion and a wake-up call to the conscience of our nation and politics. We are a pretentious people who malign and destroy people whilst alive and celebrate their true persons in death. May the healing balm that flows from Emmanuel's veins heal our nation.”
