I'm not surprised at all at the attitude of Nii Lantey Vanderpuye. What we must ask ourselves is, does he deserve to collect salary as a parliamentarian and as a minister at the same time. How much time does he devote to both jobs. Obviously, for all the period he is supposed to appear in parliament, he hasn't, so why must he collect pay for no work done? You see, when a radio sports commentator decides to resign his job in other to seek greener pasture in politics and he is rewarded with a post that is higher than that of his former boss at GBC, this is the result you get. The man is only good at rallying tugs to disrupt peaceful registration and election activities, that all.

I have been calling for demolishing of illegal strictures constructed on waters ways since the killer flood killed more than 200 people in Accra. I have even called for the exercise to be extended to all the regional capitals, cities and towns where such structures exist. In fact, I feel the exercise should be broadened to include securing our pavements or walkways from traders who extend their verandas and structures to cover the walkways or pavements, forcing pedestrians to walk on our streets and endanger their lives. Also, Containers and kiosks placed on these walkways or pavements should be taken away or demolished on sight. Above all, the scenes depict how uncivilized we are as a nation.
Sadly, the officials who facilitate these illegal actions in our society, either directly through bribery or indirectly through negligence of duty, are left free. They are now lying low for the dust to settle so that they could continue lining their pockets again at the expense of this nation and its people. It looks like our laws are only applied on the week and vulnerable, leaving the real culprits whose actions lead to such catastrophes. They must also be sought and dragged to court to answer and be given long jail terms, if found guilty, for proper lessons to be learned. We can't keep criminals and nation wreckers masquerading as civil servants in our society. In addition, what has the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, and his two deputies been doing or have done to uphold Ghanaian laws regarding our environment?

Until we have changed the way our government operates and the legislative and executive arms earn the income that suits their input, there will be no change in the life of the ordinary Ghanaian.
What do I mean by that? Until parliamentarians and ministers stop getting wages that they don't deserve, they will never see the reason why Ghanaians are complaining. If they see the need for all the benefits that they have allotted to themselves to make life comfortable because to them that is the reality of today's economic condition, why do they think that comfort should be denied others outside politics? People of Ghana, your legislators and the executive arm will never change anything to their disadvantage. It is you and I who will have to change the status quo. I'm bringing this up today and I believe people will take it up from here and talk about it till the constitution is amended. The amendment must see a change in the situation where legislators pass bills on benefits that goes to them without any trouble, but refuse to do the same for others. They must not decide how much they earn; that must be decided by the people, and it must go up in proportion with that of the rest of us. The free this and free that must cease. That does not make them feel what we feel, and therefore does not lead to taking sensible decisions to solve our problems. It will also be less attractive to nobodies who resign their jobs to seek greener pasture in politics only to enrich themselves.
The second issue is the situation where a parliamentarian is given a ministerial appointment yet, continue to be a legislator. Yes, the constitution allows that, but common sense must tell us that it is not proper, and they can never perform efficiently in both capacities. I'm therefore not surprise that things are not working for us. Somebody must talk about this, I have started it. Let's talk and call for a change. We have the power to turn things around. The politicians will not do it, left to them alone.

The minister is called Collins Dauda not Nii Lantey. The Dep. Minister can only move if assigned b y the substantive minister. Sadly our constitution says when a minister is absent the ministry is led by another cabinet minister not the deputy. I can understand the bashing now by members of the opposition but am amused there are two deputies and only Nii's name is bashed. O hatred why art thou shameless.

What we have now is US Executive constitution, where absolute power is concentrated in the Executive. Except that there are no checks and balances in Ghana's Executive constitution. In the US the Senate which controls the nation's treasury serves as checks on Executive power, because it can withhold finances and paralyze Executive programs if the Executive oversteps its boundary. But in Ghana, the Executive controls the Consolidated Account (the treasury) and can do as it wishes with our finances without the oversight of Parliament. This is how JJ Rawlings designed the 1994 constitution so that he would have absolute control as before the promulgation of the constitution. In our present system, the Executive controls the nation's treasury; the same Executive is mandated by the constitution to appoint ministers and regional executives, Judges, and all the top positions in government. As a result, the Executive is all-powerful.
What Ghana needs, yes, you are right; a reform that will transfer power to the people's representatives, i.e., Parliament. The British Westminister system of government will be the best for the country, where we have a Prime Minister who is head of the government and a ceremonial head of state (President). This was the case in the 1968 constitution where Dr. K.A. Busia became the first Ghanaian Prime Minister, and AKuffo Addo was a ceremonial President.
Our present Executive system is susceptible to fragrant abuse. JJ Rawlings abused it big time and JA Kufuor was even worst. It may also have been the reason why President Mills was eliminated, because NDC feared President Mills would not permit the party to dip its hand into the Consolidated Account (the treasury) to run the elections and getting rid of him was the party's best option to win the election. If you remember the nation is always broke after every election; Ghana was broke after the 2000 elections, and again in 2008 the country was broke again because the party in power has always been dipping its hand in the Consolidated Account to run its election.
President Mills was determined not to let that happen under his watch. First NDC used the bogus judgment debt ruling to transfer this huge amount to Wayome (Wayomegate) so that Wayome will finance the election, then they found out that the party needs more than they paid Woyome in order to win the election and with Mills still the President, there was no way the party could have access to the Consolidated Account. He had to be eliminated.

Of course any sensible Ghanaian knows very well that the 1992 Constitution is of many flaws that it needs to be rewrite again to prune from it unnecessary clauses and insert into very pertinent clauses. I think the President is exercising absolute power which needs to be looked into and get amended.
If a Member of Parliament who is made King by his people is to give out his seat in Parliament which there would be no any conflict of interest whatsoever from any angle why then the Pre4sident is allowed to appoint from Parliament a member who of course is from his ruling party for Ministerial Position which clearly would bleed conflict of interest somewhere along the line? If we have come to embrace Western Political system, then we have to practice it as the custodians are doing in order to achieve the maximum result.
Not quite long ago when Mr. Obama appointed then Senator John Kerry as his Secretary of State, Mr. Kerry has to give out his Senatorial Seat. Mr. Kerry's State Governor is mandated by the State Law to appoint a replacement to fill Mr. Kerry's seat which of course should be a member of the Party Secretary Kerry was serving on their ticket. Such appointment by the Governor runs through the remaining term till the next election period.
Ministers and their Deputies are to be appointed outside the Legislative Body so to stop that nonsense which is going on from the Executive Branch. These fools should realize that they are not accountable to the President but rather the citizens of the Nation. The President been only a custodian of the people's assets do not foot their salaries and allowances but rather the poor tax payers. Hence they have representatives in the August House to do their business for them by inviting the President's appointees to questioning when some business falls short. Should these Ministers and their Deputies can ignore the calling of the Legislative Body to answer some pertinent questions, then the Constitution is to be revisited to make amendments of the Executive powers.
We do not have a long way to go to make institutions work as it is working in the countries we are copying from should we think and do things positively, love our country and stop that tribal nonsense and our inward looking of people whom we do not share things in common and most importantly looking down on people who someway society have made their life's unbearable. E&OE.
