The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, believes that Ghana's democracy has been strengthened following the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) defeat in the recent election.

In a recent interview with Accra-based TV3, he expressed optimism that President-elect John Dramani Mahama will fulfill his promises and not disappoint Ghanaians.

He cited his confidence in Mahama's ability to honor manifesto pledges within economic constraints.

"I think that Ghana's democracy is stronger and better with the NPP losing. I believe President Mahama will not disappoint the Ghanaian electorate. He will do his utmost best to honor the pledges in the manifesto within the constraints of the economy. I am confident that he will turn the fortunes of the country around and build the Ghana that we all desire," he noted.

Haruna Iddrisu also condemned the post-election violence that erupted in some parts of the country, alleging that certain incidents were instigated by supporters of both major political parties.

He alleged that the unrest stemmed from NPP supporters exposing their own candidates for allegedly failing to distribute campaign resources as promised, which led to further tension.

"I'm encouraging the media to probe further. In Tamale, even before the NDC joined, there were incidents of criminal looting. I don't support such actions, and the police must deal decisively with anyone involved. It was, however, NPP supporters who initiated this when they pursued their own candidates who had hoarded campaign items such as motorbikes and roofing sheets," he explained.

Haruna Iddrisu called for calm and urged all political actors to prioritise peace and national unity.
