Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, running mate to New Patriotic Party’s flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo, has urged Ghanaians to go out and vote peacefully as the country elects a new president and members of parliament for the next four years.

“The wait is over. Please go out and vote peacefully,” Dr Bawumia tweeted on voting day Wednesday 7 December.

Dr Bawumia will become the vice president of Ghana should Mr Akufo-Addo win the election.

Voting started at exactly 7am in some polling centres in the 275 constituencies across Ghana while some began after the stipulated time.

Scores of voters queued up at dawn in anticipation of voting early.

Some voters were seen in queues as early as midnight. Some of them were also holding queue spots for their family members.

There are seven main candidates in the presidential race including President John Mahama of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), who is seeking re-election for a second and final four-year term.

His main contender in the race is Nana Akufo-Addo, who is having a third go at the presidency.

The rest are former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Ivor Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Dr Edward Mahama of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), and independent candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah.
