'Anti-LGBTQ+ bill must be passed, otherwise I will not return to parliament' - NDC MP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho West, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has reportedly given an ultimatum on the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBT bill.

Kwasi Bedzrah, who is a co-sponsor of the anti-LGBT bill, according to a report by TV3, said that the bill must be passed into law before the end of the current 9th Parliament.

He is reported to have said that, should the government fail to pass the bill before the end of the 9th Parliament, he would not contest for the Ho West seat in the 2028 general elections.

"This bill must be passed, otherwise I will not return to parliament," he is quoted to have said.

The “threat” by the NDC Member of Parliament comes after President John Dramani Mahama was bashed by a faction of the public after he (Mahama) stated the passage of the bill was not a “priority” for his government.

Speaking at a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House on March 30, 2026, President Mahama described the LGBTQ+ topic as sensitive and emotionally charged, urging a calm and respectful national conversation on the issue.

"I explained during my recent engagement with the World Affairs Council that it is not the most important issue we face as a nation.

"We are still grappling with the provision of basic needs of education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter," he added.

He emphasised that his government seeks to address core socio-economic challenges to improve living conditions for citizens before tackling other issues.

However, his comments, which appear not to have been well received by some men of God, have sparked reactions from some of these pastors.
