The Member of Parliament for Nabdam and Chairperson of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr Mark Kurt Nawaane, has defended the government’s approach to stalled health infrastructure projects and urged the Minority to continue drawing attention to facilities left uncompleted by their administration.

Speaking on Asempa FM on June 10, 2026, Dr Nawaane noted that the Minority’s complaints about delayed health projects reflect the same tactics the current administration used when it was in opposition.

“What the Minority is doing now, we did the same when we were in the Minority,” he said.

His remarks followed a recent inspection by Minority members of Parliament’s Health Committee, led by Ranking Member Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, who visited a number of health facilities in the Ashanti Region.

Weeds take over Afari Military Hospital after gov’t ‘failed’ to operationalise it

The tour was prompted by concerns about strain on health infrastructure, including ongoing challenges at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Dr Nawaane argued that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration left a number of health projects unattended for several years, leading to deterioration in some cases.

“They should continue weeding. They left those projects there for eight years before we came to power,” he stated.

He further claimed that some of the facilities had suffered serious damage due to prolonged neglect.

“When we went there, all the equipment had been damaged and was no longer fit for purpose. They attempted to commission the facilities, but they couldn’t,” he alleged.

He also pointed out that the Sewua and Afari hospital projects were originally started during President John Mahama’s first term but were left incomplete throughout the NPP’s time in office.

“The projects in Sewua and Afari were projects Mahama started during his first term,” he said.

Dr Nawaane added that the government is trying to balance infrastructure completion with broader economic recovery efforts. He explained that fiscal conditions at the time required caution.

“When we came, the economy was in intensive care, and we have started fixing it,” he said.

He also stressed that the government is avoiding external borrowing for project completion, instead relying on internal funding.

“We are not going to borrow from external sources for projects. Last year, we used our internal resources. We don’t want to go down the borrowing path anymore because we need to stabilise the economy,” he explained.

Despite the constraints, he assured that efforts are ongoing to complete all unfinished health facilities nationwide.

“We are committed to completing all the uncompleted projects they left behind,” he added.
