Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi
Chairman Wontumi chose to pursue plea negotiations in the Exim Bank matter as part of a lawful effort to resolve outstanding legal and commercial issues, according to a statement from his campaign team.
In a statement signed by Media and Communications Director Ewuradjoa Coleman, the campaign said the financial facility at the centre of the case was secured to support a large-scale agricultural enterprise aimed at boosting food production, creating jobs and contributing to Ghana’s agricultural development.
The statement described the venture as a genuine investment rather than a speculative project, citing Chairman Wontumi’s record in agriculture.
It noted that in 2018, Wontumi’s farming enterprise received national recognition when he was named Ashanti Regional Best Farmer, First Runner-Up, during the 34th National Farmers’ Day celebrations.
His 10,000-acre maize farm in the Sekyere Central District was highlighted by agricultural authorities as a significant contribution to national food production.
According to the statement, challenges commonly associated with large-scale farming, including adverse weather conditions, market fluctuations and production constraints, affected the venture’s ability to meet financial obligations within projected timelines.
The campaign said Wontumi’s decision to engage in plea negotiations reflected a commitment to resolving the matter through legal channels rather than engaging in prolonged litigation.
It stressed that plea negotiations are recognised under Ghanaian law and should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt.
“The law expressly provides avenues through which parties may negotiate settlements, including arrangements that may lead to the withdrawal of charges where appropriate,” the statement said.
The campaign further argued that seeking a negotiated settlement demonstrated responsibility and respect for due process, adding that Wontumi remained committed to fulfilling his obligations and contributing to national development.
