Dr Afriye has urged Kennedy Agyapong to be abreast with facts and not rely on sheer populism
The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has responded to defeated NPP presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong over his recent comments on the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region.
According to Dr Afriye, Kennedy Agyapong’s account of what happened during the NPP’s tenure in office is far from the truth about the Afari Military Hospital project.
In a social media post on June 17, 2026, he insisted that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration did not neglect the facility.
Dr Afriye also countered Kennedy Agyapong’s claim that, during his time as Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, he and other committee members were denied entry by security during an inspection visit to the facility.
Dr Afriye explained that the then Speaker of Parliament had tasked the Health Committee, not the Defence and Interior Committee, with visiting the facility and providing feedback. The visit, he noted, was conducted with then Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul.
‘Facts, not sheer populism’ - Dr Afriye jabs Ken Agyapong over ‘falsehood’ on Afari Hospital
“In 2023, when the Health Committee visited Afari Hospital, the contractor needed $6 million to complete works. Minister Nitiwul, in our post-visit meeting with you, we advised the government to release the $6 million to the contractor in order for him to progress quickly into Phase II. However, I called for the operationalisation of Phase I since it was ready to be handed over,” Dr Afriye stated.
He added, “Ken lied! The Speaker’s committee tasked to visit Afari was Health, not Defence! We did so with Nitiwul and reported as such!”
He further stated that Kennedy Agyapong should be abreast with facts and not rely on sheer populism in making his claims.
He shared receipts of payments made by the NPP government to support the hospital project, insisting that the previous administration did not neglect the facility.
In a series of posts, Dr Afriye alleged that Agyapong had ties with the contractor working on the project. He added that during a visit, the contractor disclosed that only sewerage works were outstanding, while Phase 1 of the facility was ready for use.
Providing details of payments and commitments by the NPP government, Dr Afriye wrote, “Folks, attached is a letter requesting $6 million as final payment for works at Afari Hospital.
The minister renegotiated and paid EDI.”
He added, “Facts for Ken Agyapong & not sheer populism:
1.“Government paid the full $180 million [entire project cost].
2.“Minister Nitiwul paid an additional re-evaluation bill in full at $19.3 million.
3.“Minister Nitiwul paid a final $2.5 million out of the $3 million [government renegotiated his proposed $6 million to $3 million, paid $2.5 million, leaving a balance of $500,000 as of December 31, 2024].”
Among his posts, he shared a video of the Parliamentary Health Committee’s visit to the facility in 2023.
In the video, former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul was also captured speaking about the project.
Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, stated during an interview on June 16, 2026, that while serving as Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee, he led a team to inspect the hospital, but they were denied entry.
Meanwhile, the Minority Caucus in Parliament recently visited the facility and accused the government of abandoning the project.
