Private legal practitioner and political commentator Maurice Ampaw has attributed the prolonged stay of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in office to what he described as former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s loyalty to close associates.
Speaking on GhanaWeb’s Lowdown show, Ampaw argued that Akufo-Addo’s tendency to reward loyalty contributed to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) electoral challenges.

According to him, Ofori-Atta should have been reassigned after the first term of the Akufo-Addo administration, particularly following the economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Akufo-Addo’s problem was rewarding loyalty. He trusted a few people too much and kept them in office for too long. If Ofori-Atta had left after the first term, many Ghanaians would have remembered him as one of the best Finance Ministers,” Ampaw said.
He argued that allowing ministers and chief executives to remain in office for extended periods breeds complacency, public resentment, and perceptions of entitlement.
