'Lay down weapons of internal warfare' - Bryan Acheampong appeals to Ken Agyapong

Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has urged former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong to put internal disagreements behind him and rally behind efforts to rebuild the party ahead of the 2028 general election.

In a statement issued on June 19, 2026, he warned that continued internal divisions risk weakening the party’s chances of returning to power, stressing that unity and reconciliation must now take priority over personal grievances and post-primary tensions.

"I appeal to Hon Kennedy Agyapong, to his supporters, and to mine: let us lay down the weapons of internal warfare. Let us act on the verb UNITY. Let us close ranks behind our flagbearer so that in 2028 we restore the New Patriotic Party to the service of the people of Ghana", he stated.

Dr Bryan Acheampong noted that while emotions remain high after the primaries, the party cannot afford to remain locked in internal conflict when its focus should be on rebuilding and regrouping for 2028.

He acknowledged that tensions have emerged within the party, particularly involving Kennedy Agyapong, following the heated primaries, and said some remarks made during the period were regrettable.

"Let me be candid: his hurt is real. During and after the contest, a few voices around the flagbearer and even within my own campaign directed disrespect and insults at Hon Agyapong words unworthy of our tradition. Many of us wished those individuals had been restrained and wished our elders had moved more swiftly to call them to order. That wish was legitimate", the statement said.

However, he cautioned against allowing those incidents to define the broader party or deepen existing divisions, stressing that responsibility for such actions lies with individuals rather than the leadership.

Acheampong also stated that there is no evidence the party’s flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, sanctioned or directed any attacks against Agyapong.

"There is no evidence that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned, directed, or endorsed those attacks. The individuals responsible carry their own long-standing grievances with Hon Agyapong—quarrels that are personal to them and that they have pursued on their own account. It would be a grave error to allow the misconduct of a few to be charged to the account of our flagbearer, or worse, to our entire party", it stated.

He appealed to all factions within the NPP, including supporters of Agyapong, to embrace reconciliation and avoid further escalation of tensions, adding that unity will be key to the party’s chances in 2028.

His call comes after comments by Kennedy Agyapong suggesting he would not be silenced by criticism from within the party.

Agyapong has declared that he will not be intimidated or silenced by internal criticism within the party amid renewed tensions over his public comments on governance and accountability.
