Minority Women’s Caucus backs Adwoa Safo, condemns attack and demands a full police investigation
The Minority Women's Caucus in Parliament has strongly condemned the violent attack on former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, describing the incident as a reprehensible act that has no place in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei, on behalf of the Caucus, the women legislators expressed profound shock and concern over reports that the former Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister was violently attacked during a family-related event at Kwabenya.
The Caucus stated that it unequivocally condemns every form of violence against women, stressing that no woman should be subjected to intimidation, physical assault or the use of firearms while exercising her lawful rights or participating in family, community or public affairs.
The Minority Women's Caucus expressed solidarity with Adwoa Safo and wished her a full and speedy recovery from the injuries she sustained during the attack.
While commending the Ghana Police Service for its swift intervention, the Caucus urged investigators to pursue the matter thoroughly, professionally and without fear or favour.
It further called on the Attorney-General and all relevant state institutions to ensure that any person found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
"Justice must not only be done but must manifestly be seen to be done," the statement stressed.
According to the Caucus, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the growing need to strengthen measures aimed at protecting women from violence, abuse and intimidation.
The women legislators noted that acts of brutality and gender-based violence undermine the country's democratic values and must never be tolerated.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of women and girls, the Minority Women's Caucus pledged to continue advocating for the safety, dignity and rights of every woman in Ghana.
The Caucus also called on all Ghanaians to reject violence in all its forms and embrace dialogue, mutual respect and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
