‘Even if people in the NDC are found guilty, they will be prosecuted’ – Ken Ashigbey

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ken Ashigbey, has insisted that members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not be shielded from prosecution if they are found guilty of engaging in illegal mining or related offences.

Speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosiisen on July 20, 2026, Ashigbey stressed that the fight against illegal mining must be applied fairly and without political bias if Ghana is to restore sanity to the sector.

"Even if people in the NDC are found guilty, they will be prosecuted. They will face the law. That is what we need in order to retrieve Ghana back," he stated.

Ashigbey argued that the prosecution of individuals involved in illegal mining should not be selective, saying the law must apply equally to all persons regardless of their political affiliation.

He maintained that only an impartial justice system would help the country reclaim its environment and effectively curb the menace of illegal mining.

His comments come on the heels of the sentencing of Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in the Akonta Mining illegal mining case.
