The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the suspension of its chairman for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Stephen Ofosu Agyare.

According to a letter issued by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the party decided to suspend the chairman for five months after a meeting held on July 21, 2026, on a petition lodged against him by the Member of Parliament for the area, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.

The General Secretary's committee found the suspension was necessary after a review of the matter.

“Having extensively deliberated on the matter, FEC found sufficient basis to invoke the provision of Article 48(4) and Article 48(6) of the party’s Constitution. Accordingly, you are hereby suspended from your position as Constituency Chairman of Awutu Senya East Constituency for a period of five (5) months, effective immediately.

The General Secretary has stated that the matter has been referred to the national leadership of the party for further investigation and action.

“FEC has further referred the matter to the National Disciplinary Committee for investigation and appropriate action in accordance with the Constitution of the Party. During the period of your suspension, you are required to refrain from performing any functions or exercising any authority as Constituency Chairman until the matter is finally determined or otherwise directed by the Party,” it added.

Failed Marriage Proposal, WC Ticket: Inside the alleged feud between MP Naa Koryoo and NDC chairman

Although the details of the petition submitted by the MP have not been made public, there have been reports of a huge divide among the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

According to these reports, the division has been caused by a feud between the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, and the constituency's NDC chairman, Stephen Ofosu Agyare.

An NDC executive in the constituency, who has been identified as the MP's spokesperson, claimed in a recent interview that his boss and the constituency chairman are at loggerheads over a failed marriage proposal.

He said that the chairman proposed making the MP his second wife, but she refused after initially agreeing to a deal they had.

The spokesperson said that Agyare claimed that Naa Koryoo agreed to marry him if he helped her become the NDC parliamentary candidate for the constituency in the 2020 election, but she did not stick to her word.

"One of the main things that has brought about this division is that he (the constituency chairman) wanted to marry Honourable Naa Koryoo, in addition to his wife. But the woman said 'no'. Then he said, 'It is the reason why I helped you to become an MP. So, if you knew you wouldn't marry me, why did you accept my help then?'

"But she told him that, 'You also did not say anything to me; I thought you were just helping me to campaign," he said in the Twi dialect.
