Chairman Wontumi is a political prisoner - Sylvester Tetteh

New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary hopeful Sylvester Tetteh has described Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, as a political prisoner following his conviction and sentencing.

In a statement issued on July 23, 2026, under his campaign for the NPP General Secretary position, Tetteh expressed solidarity with Chairman Wontumi, arguing that the conviction raises serious concerns about the administration of justice.

According to him, Chairman Wontumi was not convicted of illegal mining but rather over allegations that he assigned his mining concession to a third party.

Tetteh maintained that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to prove the allegation beyond reasonable doubt, yet the court imposed a 20-year prison sentence.

"In my view, the prosecution failed to establish that allegation with sufficient evidence, yet he received a 20-year prison sentence. This, in my opinion, constitutes a travesty of justice and raises serious concerns about the fair and impartial administration of justice," portions of the statement read.

The NPP General Secretary aspirant further called on members and supporters of the party to remain calm while rallying behind Chairman Wontumi.

"I stand in unwavering solidarity with Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) and firmly believe that he is a political prisoner," he stated.

Tetteh urged party faithful to stay united and continue defending what he described as justice, democracy, and the rule of law.

"I call on all members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party to remain calm, united and resolute. We must stand firmly with Chairman Wontumi and continue to defend justice, democracy and the rule of law," the statement added.
