Finance Minister's spending stance will cause palpitations amongs ministers - Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the Finance Minister's comments on spending, arguing that the remarks are a cause for concern.

Speaking after the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026, he said that the Finance Minister’s statement could cause palpitations among ministers of state.

“Mr Speaker, the Finance Minister has just told this House that the true character of a finance minister is not determined by how much he spends. Such a statement must cause palpitations among ministers of state,” he said.

According to Afenyo-Markin, such comments from the Finance Minister suggest that ministers should not expect significant financial releases to execute their duties.

“Mr Speaker, basically, what he is telling all ministers is that he is not going to spend; he is not going to release funds to you,” he stated.

According to him, some ministers are facing challenges in executing their duties due to inadequate resources, leaving a number of them unable to operate effectively.

“Mr Speaker, already, you are suffering and you have been redundant in your various ministries,” he added.
