Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has issued a strong warning to the Attorney General following the 20-year prison sentence handed to NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament after Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson presented the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review on July 23, 2026, Afenyo-Markin cautioned the Attorney General to be mindful of his actions.
According to Afenyo-Markin, he is convinced that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will lose power in the 2028 general elections and that the Attorney General will find himself in opposition.

He argued that if care is not taken, an NPP government would not hesitate to prosecute and jail the Attorney General if the party returns to power.
“Let me serve a warning to the Attorney General that the ravening clouds shall not long be victorious. They shall not long possess the sky. Be careful. In 2028, you’ll be in opposition,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin further suggested that the Attorney General could end up serving a prison sentence similar to the one currently being served by Chairman Wontumi.
He added that an NPP government would ensure Chairman Wontumi regains his freedom.
“If you are not careful, if you don’t stop now, you will go and meet Wontumi there, and he will be out. But you will go in. So I am advising you now: let’s all be measured,” he said.

Commenting on Dr Ato Forson’s Mid-Year Budget presentation, Afenyo-Markin commended the Finance Minister for acknowledging some of the digitalisation reforms introduced by the previous NPP administration.
“We welcome the reforms by the Finance Minister, and for the first time, he has done something patriotic by acknowledging the digitalisation reforms we introduced in government payments. Today, he has acknowledged them.
“We commend you for acknowledging the NPP. We commend you, but you can do better. Tell your government to free all political prisoners. Wontumi deserves justice,” he added.
