The NPP better brace themselves for this tsunami, its going to be rough. For one, Afenyo-Markin attacks on Sammy Gyamfi and the Goldbod was meant to do a lot of damage. If Sammy Gyamfi were corrupt and had fallen for the bait, Alex Afenyo-Markin would have been the one taking him to the cleaners and a big win for the NPP. Wales could become the first country in the world where politicians can lose their jobs for lying to the public.

In March 2026, the Welsh Parliament advanced the Member Accountability and Elections Bill, a proposal that would make it a criminal offence for candidates and elected lawmakers to knowingly publish false or misleading statements before elections.

The bill would also introduce recall powers, meaning politicians could potentially be removed from office between elections for serious misconduct.

Supporters say the move could help restore trust in politics by making elected officials more accountable for what they tell voters. Critics, however, warn that the rules must be written carefully to protect legitimate political debate and free speech.

The proposal has passed its first legislative stage, but it is not law yet and is still being amended.

If approved, Wales could set a precedent that no other country has tried before: lie to the public, and you could lose your seat.

In 2015 there was a real scandal involving Alexander Afenyo-Markin and the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) , and he was actually questioned by Ghana's police CID. But it is important to distinguish what was alleged from what was established.
The controversy arose around ADB's plan in 2015 to float shares through an IPO and eventually list on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
Afenyo-Markin, then MP for Effutu and also a lawyer, was acting for another MP, Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah, who challenged the legality of the ADB IPO in the Supreme Court. The argument was essentially that ADB needed parliamentary approval before proceeding with the share flotation. (citifmonline.com)
Then the case was withdrawn on 29 June 2015, only a few days before ADB's IPO was launched on 3 July. That timing immediately raised suspicions. (Ghana Business News)
The "extortion" allegation come from secret/leaked audio recording emerged in which a voice identified as Afenyo-Markin appeared to discuss obtaining money in connection with the case. The most damaging part was his apparent reference to doing "legal gymnastics" so that the case could be made to fail.
Reports at the time said the alleged amount was GH¢250,000, while other allegations claimed an additional US$400,000 went into an account associated with Afenyo-Markin in South Africa and US$500,000 into an account belonging to his sister in the United States. Those much larger figures were allegations circulating around the case, not amounts that were established as having been paid by ADB. (modernghana.com)
The allegation was therefore essentially:
Afenyo-Markin used the court action against ADB's IPO as leverage, demanded money, and then withdrew/undermined the case after receiving payment.
That's why it was described as extortion/bribery, rather than simply a controversial legal strategy.
And the police really did investigate him
This part is important because it wasn't merely a political accusation on social media.
Three people petitioned the police CID to investigate the allegations. In October 2015, Afenyo-Markin was invited/questioned by the CID. Contemporary reports say police had obtained a warrant and that he reported himself to the police before they could arrest him. He was subsequently granted bail of GH¢500,000 with two sureties. The reported offence under investigation was extortion under Section 151 of Ghana's Criminal Offences Act.
