'Don't be distracted' – Bawumia tells Afenyo-Markin to pursue GH¢1.7 billion GoldBod 'loss'

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin not to be distracted in his efforts to seek answers over an alleged GH¢1.7 billion loss linked to the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana.

Dr Bawumia made the call during a meeting with Afenyo-Markin at his private residence in Accra on Monday, August 24, 2026.

Providing details of the meeting, Afenyo-Markin said that it focused on party matters and the agenda of the Minority ahead of Parliament’s emergency sitting convened by the Speaker.

According to Afenyo-Markin, Dr Bawumia expressed confidence in his leadership of the Minority and urged him to remain focused on the alleged loss, which he said was equivalent to 1.5% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He said Dr Bawumia cautioned him against attempts to divert public attention from the issue.

“Dr Bawumia expressed his full confidence in my leadership of the Minority. He urged me to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a figure confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) own August 2026 report.

“He cautioned me against being distracted by attempts to divert public attention from it,” Afenyo-Markin disclosed on his Facebook page.

Dr Bawumia also called on the Minority to use the rules of Parliament to ensure that the government is held accountable over the alleged loss.

“He called on the Minority, under my leadership, to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for this loss. He commended the Minority for its efforts so far,” Afenyo-Markin said.

Afenyo-Markin also, on his side, assured Dr Bawumia that the Minority would continue to pursue the matter, saying the alleged loss remains a key issue on its agenda as Parliament reconvenes.

“I assured him that this is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.

“I further informed him that this colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes today,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin said the Minority would remain committed to the issue until Ghanaians receive answers.

“We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve,” he concluded.
