Nabla questions rejection of MTN’s GH¢20m donation for South Africa evacuation

The 2024 presidential candidate of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, has questioned the government’s decision to reject a GH¢20 million donation from MTN towards efforts to assist Ghanaians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Nabla said the decision was difficult to understand, particularly because the government later spent a significantly larger amount of taxpayers’ money to evacuate Ghanaians from the country.

“I was surprised when the Minister of Foreign Affairs rejected 20 million,” she said.

She questioned why the government could not have accepted the donation and still used public funds where necessary to support the evacuation and other interventions.

“Why won’t they take the 20 million and still use taxpayers’ money to evacuate people?” she questioned.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on September 11, 2026, Nabla argued that the GH¢20 million could have been used to address other pressing national needs, including challenges confronting the education sector.

“They didn’t ask Ghanaians whether we wanted the money or not. We could have benefitted from this money. Look at what is happening in our SHSs,” she noted.

Nabla has also called for a breakdown of the expenditure, stressing that the funds used were taxpayers’ money and not NDC party dues.

She further cited Nigeria’s approach to evacuating its citizens and questioned whether Ghana could have explored similar arrangements or sought support from South Africa over the harm suffered by Ghanaians during the attacks.

Her comments come amid concerns over the government’s reported GH¢49.7 million expenditure on the evacuation exercise.
