The Loyal Ladies of the New Patriotic Party, a volunteer group within the party, will today (Saturday) invade Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, to serve residents there with free waakye, a local delicacy.
Dubbed ‘Waakye Fest’, the ladies will converge at the Ashaiman Zongo Roundabout between 10:00am and 2:00pm serve free food to create a platform to campaign for the party’s flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo.
“NPP Loyal Ladies will be serving Waakye to the residents of Ashaiman as part of our campaign to encourage Ghanaians to hold on as change is imminent” a statement issued by the group said.
The group among others things seeks to ensure victory for the NPP in major elections and use its outreach activities and programmes as a platform to groom future progressive women leaders for the country at large.
In August, the ladies with support from the party’s parliamentary candidate in the Ayawaso East constituency, Peter Mireku, organised a ‘kokoo’ party where the constituents were served local porridge, kokoo , as break fast.
Opponents of the NPP described the strategy of the group as vote buying something the NPP and the ruling National Democratic Congress have been accused of ahead of this year’s December 7 general elections.
But the National Youth Organiser of the NPP Mr Sammi Awuku, rejected the description of the kooko party as vote buying.
“We are not telling them to take this and vote for us, our parliamentary candidate is embarking on this outreach to reach out to the less-privileged in the constituency, and as youth, we feel that it is important to give him that,” he told journalists at the event.
