1003 Laughs Indeed

Thu, 6 Jul 2006 Source: ghanamusic.com

There are only a few shows these days which live up to their huge media hype. The Night of 1003 Laughs which came off at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) last Sunday was one of those rare shows which surpassed its hype.

It was fun galore as patrons were treated to good music and a series of side-splitting comic and satirical performances that left many doubled up in laughter for a greater part of the three and a half hour show.

Charter House, organisers of the event didn?t mince words when they promised that patrons to the show will have 1003 things to laugh about.

Patrons certainly had more than that number of reasons since patrons couldn?t help but laugh their hearts out when the comedians mounted the stage one after the other.

The line up of comedians was impressive. There was Okey Bakasi, Teju Babyface and Klint da Drunk all renowned comedians from Nigeria.

David and Foster, finalists of the Comedy Icon segment of the Stars of the Future were also in the house. Unlike previous Night of Laughs shows where certain comedians had been outstanding, it was difficult to single out anyone who stepped on stage as carrying the day last Sunday.

Even David and Foster who are relatively new in the business were a force to reckon with. The duo managed to fool everyone when they asked patrons to be on their feet to acknowledge the national anthem.

And when everybody was up expecting to hear God Bless Our Homeland Ghana, Okomfo Kwadee?s Ka wo nan toso rather boomed through the auditorium.

As usual, the Nigerian comedians dished out their humour filled well-stringed jokes to the admiration of all. One cannot seem to put a finger on it but there is something about the Nigerian comedians that had patrons holding their aching sides through out the night.

They hung on every word and it looked as if everything that came from their mouths was a happy pill.

Klint da Drunk laced his perfomances with music. As he staggered on stage, he did his own version of Bob Mcferrin?s Don?t Worry, Be Happy. And of course it was funny. And before he went off stage, he made sure patrons were aware of his dancing prowess too.

Although he did it the last time he was here, Teju Babyface did it again and still got patrons roaring with laughter.

He dissed the MC, Kwasi Anim Adjei for not announcing him on stage properly. So he went back stage and re-introduced himself.

The way he did it was just too much. He got people bending over in stitches.

Patrons received Okey Bakasi?s stress relieving antidotes with relish. He delivered jaw-breaking jokes on social topics. One that easily comes to mind is the one on mouth odour.

He said in case someone is not in the know if he/she has a bad mouth odour, he/she should check if he always wins arguments even before it is started or often receives gifts of tooth brushes and mouth refreshners.

The night wasn?t all comedy. There was ?enough? music. Irene Logan, winner of Stars of the Future and her first and second runners up, Ramzy and Jane treated patrons to beautiful performances. Ramzy did James Brown?s I Feel Good and it was great.

Irene and Jane?s rendition of Gloria Estefan?s Conga was even greater. Especially as they did the salsa dance too.

As if that was not enough, the Rap Executioner, Obrafuor and Rap Heavy Weight Champion, Lord Kenya were present.

They got the audience into the groove when they performed their latest songs. Obrafuor did Heavy while Lord kenya did Born Again. Nigerian actor, Segun Arinze performed a song.

Patrons also had the opportunity to see live the housemates of Big Brother Nigeria (BBN).

They came on stage in the order of their eviction from the house and answered some questions from Big Brother.

Though this segment was interesting, some members of the audience didn?t seem to catch it since BBN was shown on M-Net and not everyone subscribed to it.

The Night of 1003 Laughs was organised to help relax and unwind hard working individuals in the society after months of non-stop working.

It was a reward well received from Charter House with support from Areeba, Unique Trust, Joy FM and TV3.

And since Charter House said the event would be held twice a year, there is no doubt that 1004 Laughs is already highly expected.
