A ninety-year-old man, Sulemana Basare has been sentenced to seven years in prison for defiling a 16-year-old girl. Prison authorities at the Sunyani Central Prisons however doubt the reasoning for the imposition of the sentence and have called for a review of his case. They wonder whether he could have committed the offence considering the fact that he is physically weak and not able to stand up by himself.
The Brong Ahafo Regional Director of prisons, Mr. Baidoo-Ahmed told the Ghana News Agency that Basare could not also attend nature’s call unassisted and has been wetting his clothes with his urine since he was taken to prison last Friday.
The prison authorities say the tribunal could have given him a suspended sentence with a bond, if he really committed the offence.
