...Songs With Vulgar Lyrics Are To Be Banned
The Musicians Union of Ghana says it would ban songs that contain vulgar lyrics and undermined the moral values of society. Sanctions would also be imposed on the composers of the songs. A committee has been set up to review songs with the alleged vulgar lyrics and advise the composers to make the necessary changes. MUSIGA president, Alhaji Sidiku Buari says, the union will liase with the radio stations and other end users to ban such works if the affected musicians and composers fail to comply.
"We have a lot of talents in the music industry and unfortunately some of them are able to sell their songs with such lyrics. We have a code of ethics as a union and we have to abide by it." There has been an avalanche of criticism of some songs particularly those sang by the hip life and burger highlife artistes.
While some have been condemned for their use of profane and suggestive words, other have been criticised for the lack of educative materials in their albums. Alhaji Buari, who is also the Acting President of COSGA advised up and coming musicians to stick to highlife and other traditional music since that was the only way to gaining international attention.
