Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has described the absence of many Ghanaian filmmakers at the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit as disheartening.
In an interview with TV3, the actress, known for her role in the popular series "Efiewura," expressed her heartbreak over the situation, emphasising that the summit was organised to foster the development of the African movie industry.
While she acknowledged that some filmmakers might be busy on set, she said that shouldn't prevent them from attending the summit.
“We’ve learned a lot. As I said, it's all about Africa, projecting our local languages and cinema markets. It’s really disheartening; I think that’s the better word to describe it, to realise that most of our industry players were not here,” she said.
She recounted feeling embarrassed when one of the speakers asked about the number of industry professionals present at the event.
“Yesterday, when Kule was speaking, he asked, ‘Where are your movie producers? Where are the actors?’ It was so embarrassing that there was silence in the entire auditorium,” she noted.
“It’s possible that many of them may be filming or on set at the moment, but we could have made time for this, for the industry,” she added.
The second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit (ACS) took place from October 7 to October 10.
The first day featured Idris Elba, along with Ghana's Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts, and Culture, Andrew Agypa Mercer, his Deputy Mark Okraku-Mantey, and several other notable figures.
