Accra, Sept. 18, GNA - Accra High School on Friday won a quiz on tourism organized by the Greater Accra Regional office of the Ghana Tourist Board to create awareness on the World Tourism Day celebrations. The competition among Accra High School, O'Reilly Senior High School and La Bonne Senior High School centred on Ghana's tourism industry and was on the theme of the Tourism Day Celebration, "Tourism Celebrating Diversity."
The schools received books, tourism brochures and other reading materials for their libraries while the contestants received personal tourism books and souvenirs.
The contestants for Accra High School also received a school bag each in addition to the other prizes.
The school also gets a chance to compete at the national level during the World Tourism Day celebrations. World Tourism Day is celebrated every 27th September to draw the world's attention to the contributions of tourism to the economy of the country.
Mrs Comfort Opoku Ware, Regional Manager of the Ghana Tourist Board, told the students that Ghana was hosting this year's World Tourism Day and urged them to learn about the history, culture and the tourists' attractions that placed Ghana at a unique position on the international tourism map.
Mr Owusu Akyeampong, Public Relations Officer at the Ghana Museum and Monuments Board, also urged the Ministry of Tourism to promote the true Ghanaian culture and to focus on other tourist sites that had been listed as World Heritage sites.
He explained that too much attention was being paid to the Cape Coast and Elmina castles while other forts and castles were left to deteriorate.
Mr Akyeampong also advised the students to be interested in the tourism development of the country, reminding them that tourism was an important tool used to promote the country's image.
