Jamestown Presby Church of Ghana is 20

Accra, Dec 18, GNA - The First Deputy Speaker in Parliament, Mr. Freddie Blay, on Sunday urged Christians to pray for those in responsible positions to be creative, proactive, imaginative and for their exemplary and inspirational leadership.

"Pray for them to be humble, respectful, selfless, purposeful achievers and movers, to drive our nation fast-forward; that they eschew arrogance, intolerance, nepotism and dishonesty," he added. Mr Blay who was speaking at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Jamestown Presbyterian Church of Ghana, advised society to also endeavour to avoid wrong perceptions, mistrust, destructive cynicism, and attitudes that subvert the confidence and self-respect of those in authority.

It was under the theme: "Not By Might, Nor By Power But By My Spirit."

"It behoves on God's children to support what is right and discourage what is wrong. Ours is a collective responsibility. We sink or swim together as a people, and as a country, .... Our fate as people is tied together ... and as children of God, I urged you to distance yourselves from the kind of attitude, which seeks to drag each up or draw down each other."

He therefore, commended the congregation for their efforts all these years and urged them to assist the needy among them and share their joy and achievements together.

Elder Agyapong Asiamah, a Presbyter, appealed to the government and individuals to assist the church to build a classroom blocks for its Kindergarten to enhance effective teaching and learning at the centre. He said the Kindergarten, since its establishment in 1987, was housed in wooden structure, which was not conducive for training and learning.

The church started as a prayer cell at the Jamestown Police canteen under the leadership of the founder, Rev. Felix Angmortey-Anyasor and had moved to about three different houses due to increase in number of worshippers before acquiring finally the premises of former Mim Timber's Yard as its permanent site.

Elder Isaiah said before acquiring the site, the congregation had worshipped at Ellen House, one of the individual houses, for 17 years and was grateful to all individuals, who in diverse ways assisted them to get to this far, especially those who allowed them to use their premises initially for worship.

The Rev. Dr. Samuel Ayete-Nyanpong, Director of the Department of Ecumenical and Social Relations, advised Christians to observe cleanliness in their environment to avoid contracting malaria and other contaminated diseases.

He also urged parents, especially the women to pay a particular attention to their children's education and avoid spending most of their times at all-nights.
