Accused person's husband weeps openly in court

Kuntanase (Ash), Sept. 19, GNA - The husband of a housewife standing trial at a magistrate's court at Kuntanase for causing harm on Thursday burst into tears and shouted "Ei Agyeiwaa, Agyeiwaa" after the court had imposed a two million-cedi fine on his wife. She will serve a six-month prison term in default.

Madam Akosua Agyeiwaa, 30, was arraigned before the court for inflicting cutlass wounds on another woman and her four-month-old baby. She pleaded guilty to the charge but said she acted in self-defence as the complainant, Akosua Serwaa, 24, was the one who came to attack her in her house.

Chief Inspector Edward Osei told the court that at about 08:30 hours on June 5, this year, Agyeiwaa went to the house of the complainant who was nursing a four-month-old baby in an angry mood and warned her not to allow her children to play with her (accused) children because the complainant had branded her as a thief.

The warning, he said, resulted in a quarrel and they were separated. However, shortly afterwards, another quarrel ensued between Agyeiwaa's daughter and Serwaa.

Chief Inspector Osei said on hearing about the quarrel, Agyeiwaa entered her room and came out with a cutlass, pounced on Serwaa and slashed her on the scalp and the hand and the baby's forehead. He said the victim and her baby were rushed to the Kuntanase Hospital after the police had issued her with medical forms and later arrested Agyeiwaa.

The court ordered that one million cedis out of the fine should be given to Serwaa as compensation.
