Agya Koo Dead?

Agya Koo

News made rounds yesterday in the media that star actor and comedian Kofi Adu, known in showbiz as Agya Koo, was involved in a tragic accident with his new Zoyte SUV prize car in Accra, on his way to Kumasi after organizers of Ghana Movie Awards presented the car to him at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra, on Tuesday January 25, 2011.

Agya Koo’s life has been under threat since he was named winner of the Founders Merit Awards which comes with a car, beating big names like Chris Attoh, Majid Michel, John Dumelo, Kofi Adjorlolo, Omar Sherif Captan and other great actors to it.

According to information gathered by peacefmonline.com, Agya Koo was driving in a convoy with his Tete Mbofra Group.

Agya Koo was personally at the wheels in his new SUV together with his pretty wife and another renowned actress Rose Akua Atta Mensah, better known as Kyeiwaa, whiles other members of his group followed up in a Toyota Matrix car belonging to the wife. A reliable source disclosed to peacefmonline.com that a big truck veered into the lane of a taxi cab and in a bid to avert a headlong collision, the driver of the taxi accidentally hit the back of the Toyota Matrix which was close behind that of Agya Koo’s new SUV.

The source said described the incident as a fender-bender since the Toyota Matrix was not damaged in any way and Agya Koo had no idea something like that had happened since he was way ahead. “Agya Koo is fine, nothing happened to him or his new car. He is safe and sound, presently shooting on set,” the source said.

Relatedly, Agya Koo in an interview on Peace FM’s “Entertainment Review” yesterday, Thursday January 27, denounced the rumours and flatly denied being involved in an accident.

“If you are popular your name will always be mentioned and a lot of things will be said about you, so I am not surprised people are saying things like this about me...There is nothing wrong with me or the car. The car is parked here as I speak. I drove the car from Accra to Kumasi and I am presently shooting on location at Mankraso, and the car is parked right here. You can send some of your reporters in Kumasi to verify. I have not had any accident,” he said.

"If a car had hit or crashed into the back of any of my cars, it should be damaged but the car spots not even a single mark”.

Agya Koo received the noncompetitive Founders Merit Award for his immense contribution to the development of the Ghana movie industry, at the time when Nigerian movies had almost taken over the Ghanaian market. He was chosen based on the prerogative of the founder Fred Nuamah.

Explaining the Founders Merit Award, Fred said it is given to anybody who has contributed in an extraordinary way to the movie industry.

“The same award can go to a movie producer, a Make-up artiste, a Costumier, a Director, an Editor, an upcoming actor or actress, and anybody in the industry way who performed exceptionally well in the year under review. I, as founder, will always decide who merits that particular award,” Fred explained.
