Artiste manager and boss of Event Republic, Mel Kwesi Davis has stated unequivocally that not a single music producer in Ghana knows or thinks business.

He asserts that music producers deal with artistes in a manner which does inure to the benefit of the producers although a chunk of the work needed to make a song sound good is done by them.

Speaking on 3FM’s Showbiz927 and monitored by abrantepa.com, Mel Kwesi Davis who manages highlife artistes, K.K Fosu, Dada Hafco, among others said it is high time music producers drew a dichotomy between friendship and business, lest they will continue to make claims that the profession does not pay.

According to him, most music producers render services for free due to the friendly relationship between them and the artistes – an action which is highly unprofessional.

“All our producers are not thinking business. Straight! They are just not thinking business. Pharrell Williams still produces and people pay him millions of dollars. I’m happy we want to agree that our top musicians don’t pay [music producers well] but why don’t they pay? They don’t pay because the producers are not dealing with them professionally,” he told host, Nana Kwadwo Addo.

Adding, “The producer needs to understand that he has invested. Studio equipment is not cheap… If you want to do business, do it; if you want to mix business with friendship, go ahead. Let’s begin to understand that music is no joke. It is a business that require big investment. Be business minded. Make sure musicians pay you.”
