In its bid to give young and unpublished writers the opportunity to expand their creative writing horizon, the Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing at the African University College of Communications is inviting passionate wordsmiths to submit original work for consideration in its maiden anthology ‘Adabraka: Stories from the Centre of the World’.

This call for submissions is open from February 10 until March 31, 2018.

The collection of short stories (from 600 to 5,000 words) must be rooted in Greater Accra area. ‘Adabraka’ seeks all styles and sub-genres, including humor, nonfiction, quality flash fiction and stories with experimental narratives.

This maiden publication will be edited and published in May later this year by a team led by Nana S. Achampong, director of the Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing.

“The period for submission of works for consideration is from next Saturday to March ending. That gives interested people time to polish up whatever they wish to present. Also, authorized English translations of original stories, particularly from regional writers, are welcome and encouraged. All you have to do is visit the Centre on the AUCC Campus at Adabraka or submit at aidoocentre@aucc.edu.gh”, explained Achampong.

In March 2017, the African University College of Communications (AUCC) launched the Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing to celebrate the remarkable author who at 15, decided she wanted to be a writer. Today, Ms. Aidoo is recognized as one of Africa’s truest cultural and feminism ambassadors with several books and literary awards under her belt. The Centre provides support for critical reading and creative writing.

As part of its programs this year, the Centre will host short story writer Nana Nyarko Boateng, novelist N. Maria Kwami, and other personalities in related arts. It will organize six workshops and writing clinics. It will also launch a community reading program dubbed ‘One Book One Community’ to support the nation’s literacy drive. The year will end with a celebration of the winner of the Ama Ata Aidoo Prize for Best Original Writing in Ghana.
